Nepal's Political Scene Sees Significant Alliance Formed By TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant move ahead of the upcoming national polls, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the wake of large-scale and fatal young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Tackle Youth Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which led to significant casualties.

"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was signed.

The September uprising was triggered by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Terms of the New Electoral Partnership

According to the formal pact, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the country's older political class. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.

Broader Political Discussions Underway

In a separate event, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with a number of major political figures. These discussions included former prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the protests.

After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and open environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
