Federal Reserve Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The United States central bank cut interest rates on midweek, marking the second rate cut this year during financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Decision Arrives at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank

The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement notes. “Inflation has moved up and remains moderately high.”

Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job

The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Fed typically studies BLS data to determine employment trends, including the number of new jobs added to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was released in early September, before the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in August.

The number of jobs added to the economy in August was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Decline

Though the bureau was set to publish last month’s job market report in early October, it suspended its release when the closure started. Private payroll firm ADP reported earlier this month that the business segment cut 32,000 jobs in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated recently, a trend he had earlier attributed comes from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Shows Gradual Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still released its inflation report for last month that showed that prices are rising, although gradually. Prices rose three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
