The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US against five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the decision.
The bans were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.
This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a much broader existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and European institutions.
