At least 11 of the meteorological balloons, transporting 18,000 packs of illegal cigarettes, have now been retrieved

Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for several hours when multiple of them floated into the national airspace.

Flight Disruptions

The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.

National Security Measures

Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the airport's airspace.

As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the border with Belarus.

Contraband Recovery

No fewer than 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to customs agents.

Cross-Border Contraband Trend

Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."

So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.

Regional Consequences

Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the balloons.

Smuggling Techniques

Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."

Border Protection Aims

Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that these practices become not financially viable and present no risk to civil aviation."

European Tensions

The recent incidents occur during an era marked by heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.

Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
